Say it With Fairy Tales
“Sometimes fairy stories may say best what’s to be said.”
C.S. Lewis
Variations on this idea have already come up in our posts and will come up again. Fiction can help us to explore ideas, and feelings, and how we see the world. I’m not arguing that fiction is inherently better than nonfiction for this purpose, but it offers alternate paths to understanding. Sometimes, seeing through someone else’s eyes makes it easier to understand ourselves.
Fantasy, by taking us out of our world, allows us even more room to consider our place in the world. Fairy tales are fantasy; arguably the original fantasy. I’m a big fan of fairy tales and retellings of fairy tales, but we will save that for another time.
Stay tuned for more on C.S. Lewis when we interview Patti Callahan on her book Once Upon A Wardrobe. The interview will be streamed live on January 26 and posted on twosides2thestory.com soon after.
